Since 2004, eligible workers in California have been provided wage replacement benefits for time taken off to care for a seriously ill child, spouse, parent, domestic partner or to bond with a child within the first year after birth or adoption under the Paid Family Leave program. Beginning today, July 1, 2014, workers are also eligible for Paid Family Leave if they take time off to care for a seriously ill grandparent, sibling or parent-in-law.
As before, employers in California are required to distribute the Paid Family Leave brochure created by the California Economic Development Department to new employees and to employees who request leave for a purpose covered by Paid Family Leave. A new Paid Family Leave brochure reflecting the expanded categories should be available shortly and will be available in the HR Support Center. Until the new brochure is available, we recommend using the old brochure and noting the additional allowed categories whenever it is distributed.
